Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

Spurs were the best team in London during the 1985-1986 season, beating Arsenal to the title by goal difference.

The season was memorable for some big wins. Spurs won 5-2 at QPR and beat Chelsea 4-1 at home, but pride of place goes to QPR who thrashed Chelsea 6-0 at home.

The League Cup Second Round produced its usual upsets, not least Leyton Orient of Division Four beating Spurs 2-0 at Brisbane Road. Unfortunately for the Os, it was a two leg affair and Spurs won the second leg 4-0.

In the Third Round, Chelsea beat Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage after a 1-1 draw at the Bridge and would make it to the Fifth Round where they met another West London club, QPR.

The match at Loftus Road finished 1-1, but QPR managed to win the replay 2-0 after extra time.

After beating Chelsea, QPR they were drawn against Liverpool who would finish the season as League Champions.
But a 1-0 home win and a 2-2 draw away meant QPR were through to the Final against Oxford United who you might be surprised to hear were in the top flight of English football at the time.

Oxford beat QPR 3-0 in the Final to deprive the West Londoners of their second major piece of silverware.

One other League Cup score to mention. Spurs 2 Wimbledon 0. The last time the two teams had met was in 1977 when Spurs won 4-0 against the Dons who had only just secured League status.

Here they were playing each other again less than 10 years later. And next season they would meet again because Wimbledon finished third in Division Two to gain promotion to Division One. An incredible achievement.

In the FA Cup, West Ham beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 at The Valley and they too would meet again next season because Charlton were promoted alongside Wimbledon.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
