Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

Arsenal won bragging rights for the 1981-1982 season by coming top of the London Bragging Rights League, but Tottenham can feel very hard done by.

For starters, Spurs finished above Arsenal in the League, albeit by goal difference (the two clubs finished 4th and 5th respectively).

Spurs also beat Arsenal 3-1 away and drew 2-2 at Highbury. They also put Arsenal out of the FA Cup, beating them 1-0 at home in the Third Round.

Talking of Cups, Spurs won the FA Cup for the second year in a row. As well as knocking Arsenal out, they beat Chelsea 3-2 away before beating QPR in the FInal 1-0 in a replay after the first game finished 1-1 after extra time.

Spurs also reached the League Cup Final where they lost 3-1 to Liverpool after extra time. And in reaching Wembley they had beaten Fulham 1-0.

All season they lost just once to London opposition - a 4-0 home defeat to West Ham. Indeed they could only draw 2-2 away to West Ham too while Arsenal beat the Hammers home and away to grab the bragging rights from them.

So Arsenal it is. Football isn't always fair.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
