Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

Arsenal were the best team in London for the 1977-1978 season.

As well as their League form aghainst London opposition, Arsenal reached the Final of the FA Cup by beating Leyton Orient 3-0 in the Semis. The Second Division outfit had enjoyed a fantastic Cup run up until then, knocking out Chelsea in the Fifth Round following a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge following a 0-0 home draw against the Blues.

QPR also thrashed West Ham 6-1 in the FA Cup after a 1-1 draw at Upton Park. The Hammers were also relegated by a single point with QPR just avoiding relegation - again by a single point.

Spurs got promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt - just. They came up in third place thanks to a superior goaldifference over fourth place Brighton.

A League Cup game worth mentioning. Spurs won 4-0 against a certain Wimbledon who were playing League football for the very first time after making the leap from the Southern League.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
