Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

Arsenal didn't manage to successfully defend their League and Cup victories from the previous season, but they did finish fifth, got to the FA Cup Final and remained the best team in London - by a whisker.

In the FA Cup Fifth Round, Chelsea lost 3-2 away to Orient. The Second Division side drew Arsenal at home in the next round, but went down 1-0 to the Gunners who went all the way to Wembley for the second year in succession. This time though the Gunners lost 1-0 to Leeds United.

Chelsea had better luck in the League Cup. In the Sixth Round they met Spurs - 4-0 winners obver Fulham in the Fifth Round - and the two London rivals drew 3-3 at the Bridge. At the Lane, Chelsea won 2-1, and then went on to beat Manchester United 1-0 after extra time in the Final.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
