Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

Arsenal, kings of London, kings of England. What else can you say about a team that wins the double?

Mind you, it wasn't plain sailing for the Gunners. With a game still to play, Arsenal were a point behind Leeds United who had completed their fixtures for the season. A win or a 0-0 draw would see Arsenal win the title. Anything else and it was heading for Yorkshire.

And where did Arsenal have to go to secure the point required to win the League? Where else but White Hart Lane! 51,992 people squeezed into the Lane to witness the match with an estimated 100,000 left outside.

A win for Spurs and they would have denied Arsenal the League and the double - and bragging rights for the season, but as it was Arsenal won 1-0. Ray Kennedy headed the winner with just three minutes to play.

Six days later and Arsenal were at Wembley where they completed the double by beating Liverpool 2-1 after extra time.

Chelsea beat Palace 2-0 at home in the FA Cup Thitrd Round after a 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park, but the Eagles did better in the League Cup where they beat Arsenal 2-0 away after a goalless draw at Selhurst Park. That Cup defeat to Palace was Arsenal's only home defeat of the season.

And just to underline the capital's dominance of football during the 1970-1971 season, Spurs won the League Cup, beating Aston Villa 2-0 in the Final.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
