Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

Fans of London derby games were truly spoilt at the start of the 1969-1970 season with no less than six being played before the end of August.

Chelsea ran them close, losing just the once to London opposition all season. Too many draws however cost them the bragging rights.

Chelsea's form against London clubs was also in evidence in the FA Cup where they beat Crystal Palace 2-1 away and QPR 4-2 away before beating Leeds United in the Final which went to a replay.

With just six wins all season in the League, Palace perhaps surprisingly survived relegation - albeit by a single point. Before being knocked out of the Cup by Chelsea though they did beat Spurs 1-0 at Selhurst Park following a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
