Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

With four London clubs finishing in the top eight of Division One, it was always going to be close as to who was the best team in London during the 1968-1969 season.

In the end Arsenal edged it, despite losing twice to Chelsea in the League. It was the first time in over a decade that Arsenal could claim to be the best team in the Capital.

Arsenal also shone in the Cup competitions against London opposition. They beat Charlton 2-0 in the FA Cup and knocked Spurs out of the League Cup Semi-Finals, beating them 1-0 at Highbury and drawing 1-1 at White Hart Lane. In the Final, the Gunners lost 3-1 after extra time to Third Division Swindon Town, but the less said about that the better.

Queens Park Rangers finished bottom of the Division and were relegated straight back down to Diviion Two.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
