Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

There was no doubting the best team in London during the 1964-1965 season. While all the other teams were taking points off of each other, West Ham won seven of their eight League derby games.

In comparison, Fulham one just one League encounter against a London team - they beat Spurs 4-0 at home. Piling on the misery for the Cottagers was Fourth Division Millwall who held Fulham to a 3-3 draw before knocking them out of the Cup with a 2-0 home win at The Den.

Chelsea knocked both West Ham (1-0 away) and Spurs (1-0 at home) out of the FA Cup before going out in the Semis against eventual winners Liverpool. They did however lift the League Cup, beating Leicester City 3-2 over the two legs.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
