Football Bragging Rights

When it comes to football, winning trophies is all very well, but what really matters is who can go into work on a Monday morning with their head held high after a derby game.

It's all about bragging rights.

Newly promoted Chelsea upset the Tottenham apple cart by taking the bragging rights Westwards for the 1963-1964 season.

Both finished in the top five with just a point between them and in London they were equally difficult to seperate. Spurs beat Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge and then Chelsea beat Spurs 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

Had it ended there Spurs would have taken the bragging rights on goal difference, but as Lady Luck would have it, the teams met in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

It finished 1-1 at White Hart Lane and Chelsea won the replay 2-0 at the Bridge.

So Chelsea were London's best team during 1963-1964.

Meanwhile there was plenty to cheer in East London too. They won their first piece of major silverware by lifting the FA Cup after beating Preston 3-2 at Wembley.

On their way to winning the Cup they beat Charlton 3-0 at home and knocked out Orient too, beating them 3-0 at home after a 1-1 draw at Brisbane Road.. They also reached the Semi-Final of the League Cup, beating Orient 2-1 at home again.

Three points for a win, one for a draw, sweet FA for a lose.

Should two or more teams have the same number of points, goal difference decides bragging rights unless Cup football provides the decider.

Although in the good old days, clubs only received two points for a win in the League, the importance of beating your rivals means that no matter the season, three points for a win applies in the London Bragging Rights League.
